The next Intergroup meeting on Thursday (24/10) will feature Inés Ayala Sender MEP discussing the language situation in Aragon. The new Aragonese Languages Act, presented by the PP-PAR coalition in May 2013, means that Aragonese and Catalan are no longer recognised as “languages spoken in the region of Aragon” relegating them to mere “linguistic modalities”, with severe legal and linguistic implications. The law no longer guarantees the teaching, promotion, and protection of these languages thereby violating the rights of a large part of the population, and seriously putting the Aragonese language, recognised as endangered by UNESCO, under serious threat.
